Civics Engagement April 1, 2012

PROMPT: On the front page of www.mycivicengagement.com, you'll find links to game demo submissions of participants in the Globaloria Civics Game Competition. Play the demos in your knowledge area, then choose one (different from your choice last week) and compare the demo with the paper prototype. What developments do you see? From your own experience in game design, why do you think changes were made (if any)? What advice do you have for this team as they develop their demo into a final game?

The game "We Shall Rebuild" was....deffinately different than the prototype. The game itself was obviously more detailed, but it wouldn't work once you click on "pick'.
Eveery other game I tried did not have a functioning game, so I had nothing to compare it to.

Civics Engagement April 15, 2010

PROMPT: Researching and designing your game has shown you how many different ways the same information can be presented to an audience. Based on your Globaloria game-making experience, how do you feel about the way news and other sources might similarly manipulate information about civics? Do you have any advice for other students who want to seek out reliable media outlets? Please write 4 or more sentences

I think different news stations and such manipulate facts in their own way. If all you heard were some of the headlines instead of facts as well, you might misconstrue what's actually going on in the world. Some stations seem to leave information out, and that leaves you wondering about everything else. I think if you decide to use media for information you need to double check their facts with another source.

PROMPT: What function concept is the hardest to teach in your game, and why do you think it's difficult to understand? How does your game effectively teach this concept?

In our game, the hardest to teach is the role of citizens. We do have the voting aspect, but I'm not quite sure how to incoorperate others such as the media. Our game does effectively teach the other aspects of the function community. Although we do have one aspect of the citizen's role, I'm not sure if it's enough.

PROMPT: The technology of the 21st century has altered civic life greatly. Do you think access to virtual collaboration and communication has an impact on the function of government? Why or why not? How has the process of designing and researching your game helped you develop your opinion? Please provide specific links and examples

I think this access has impacted the function of the government. All leaders of each level of government are scattered all over the country and the world. This makes it hard to work together quickly and efficiently. With the new technology of the 21st century, you can communicate with the enitire world in a matter of seconds. With using the internet, we have been able to find actionscript for our game.

PROMPT: What are the different duties of the Presidential cabinet (specifically, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Defense and the Attorney General)? How are these people appointed, and what influence does the voting public have over them?

The most common function held by SECRETARIES OF STATE is to serve as the state's chief elections official. Appointed by the president.

The SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY is the main economic advisor to the President & plays a crucial role in policy-making by bringing an economic & government financial policy perspective to issues facing the government. They're also responsible for formulating and recommending domestic and international financial, economic, and tax policies. They manage the public debt as well. Appointed by the president.

THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE is the head of the U.S. Department of Defense, concerned with the armed services and military matters. Appointed by the president with approval of the Senate.

PROMPT:Write a blog post to introduce yourself, your team and your game to the other students in the Function Community. Use the Function Resources information page to also explain how your game fits into the Ideals Knowledge Framework. Please include hyperlinks to your team page. This post must be a minimum of 5 complete sentences.

My name is Darian. Along with Gingie and Stephanie we make up team DSG. We're designing an RPG based game focused on the different levels of government. With the way our game is designed we hope it'll teach players about the responsibilities of each branch and level. It also shows that depending on the way you handle the responsibilities can determine if voters keep you around.

Confusion

Our game is sort of at a momentary standstill. Some of the actionscript isn't working so we have to figure out what's wrong and find a way to fix it. Hopefully that happens extremely soon.

Game Progress

We don't have too much of our game done so far, but we're making steady progress. It's kind of difficult seeing as we don't really know the programs we're using all that well, but we're managing.
